THE MAJOR ARCANA
Each of the twenty-two cards of the Tarot major trumps contains a wealth of symbolism and possible meanings. This chapter is not intended to analyse all the possible variations, but it may throw light on some of the more obvious allusions.
For example, most of the cards contain references to either Classical myth and legend or else Biblical imagery. Some seem to be the product of specifically Medieval concepts, whilst others have parallels in other cultures at other times. A few cards may refer to contemporary events or personages, or include alchemical or heretical religious symbols.
Taken in sequence the cards can certainly be interpreted psychologically in terms of man's quest for enlightenment; when reversed they can warn of perils and obstacles on the path.
Finally, each card has assigned to it certain meanings which are used in the art of Tarot divination.
